The first senate member to resign was Kelsey Higgins, the director of interns, who put on her coat in the middle of the meeting and walked out after bursting into tears. “This is the first year where I’m disgusted and embarrassed by the members of this student senate,” Higgins said. Senate decided to postpone the vice president election until next week to allow the whole student body to vote.

Honoring Chardon
Ohio University students held a vigil Thursday evening in remembrance of the second anniversary of the shooting at Chardon High School. Nearly 30 people huddled together against the harsh wind to protect their candles from blowing out. Seven candles were lit and placed on the Athens Civil War Monument.

Senate discusses pros of prayer room
Student Senate would like to see an interfaith prayer room in Baker University Center where people of all religions can pray or meditate throughout the day. The idea, suggested at its meeting Wednesday night, was sparked by a successful interfaith panel held by senate’s International Affairs Commission earlier in the week.

Student Senate debates the ins and outs of guaranteed tuition
Ohio University officials visited Student Senate Wednesday to answer questions and address concerns over the university’s guaranteed tuition plan. The plan, which the university has dubbed the “OHIO Guarantee,” will offer students a flat tuition rate over a period of four years. How the university will calculate this number is somewhat complicated.

Student Senate looks to the future as Senate President Anna Morton sets new goals
Student Senate seemed to be back on track at this week’s meeting and looking toward the future. In a speech to the student body, Senate President Anna Morton outlined her goals for the semester, which included “transparency, connectedness and being applicable to the student body.”. “I am proud and grateful to be moving onward with what this semester holds for us,” Morton said.

GoBus changes ticket policy in attempt to increase safety
GoBus will try to prevent overbooking its rides, though it could still happen. When Julie Weller bought a ticket for the GoBus last year, she was unaware that her ticket wouldn’t guarantee her a seat — or her safety. Until recently, the GoBus has been taking advantage of a gray area in motor carrier regulations that allows them to sell more tickets for the bus than there are seats.

Diversity in the dorms
Despite what Ohio University claims online, international students aren’t required to live in the same residence hall once they get on campus. The website is “unfortunately outdated,” said Jneanne Hacker, associate director of assignments. Before OU changed the requirement some time ago, international students were required to live in Hoover House so they could get to know other international students.

Sweet new start for student baker
When Karris Barclay started baking cupcakes in an Ohio University residence hall kitchen last year, she wasn’t aware it would evolve into a fledgling business — or that she was breaking Ohio law. Barclay, a sophomore studying psychology and communications, launched her own full-scale cupcake business, Krave It Cupcakes, from the kitchen of OU’s Voigt Hall last year.

Stanford professor compares revolutions at Lecture Series
Technological revolutions are often thought of as modern, but this year’s first Kennedy Lecture argued the first major revolution had occurred in the 13th century. Though equally important, the two revolutions took place “thousands of miles and 800 years apart,” Devlin said. The subjects of the lecture, Leonardo Fibonacci, previously known as Leonardo of Pisa, and Steve Jobs, the Apple founder and former CEO, showed similarities in their paths to success, the Stanford professor contended.

Association of Nigerians celebrates 53rd anniversary of Nigerian independence
Saturday evening at Ping Center, Ohio University’s Association of Nigerians hosted an event to commemorate the 53rd anniversary of Nigeria’s Independence from the United Kingdom. Tables filled rapidly as people gathered for the celebration. Popular music by Nigerian artists such as D’Banj, Flavour and Wale created an upbeat atmosphere as Nigerian men, women and children, wearing the traditional dress of their country, prepared technology and food for the evening’s jam-packed agenda.

As a contributing writer at "The Post" in Athens, Ohio, I spend my time creating quality content to keep the Athens community informed. Although my regular beat is student senate, I am always on the look out for additional stories that need to be told.

As a part of the online staff, my mission is to brainstorm and implement ideas to contribute to reader engagement.

Aside from my regular management of the newspaper's main Twitter account, @ThePost, I am in the process of launching a Pinterest page for "The Post" to reach a creative audience and engage readers who are connected to that platform. As a team, we will also be launching an Instagram account and assisting in the redesign of the paper's website.

To conclude, my experience working at "The Post" has only enhanced my passion for strategic communication, so I sincerely hope to take the next step in my career by attaining an internship for the summer of 2014.
